I. Teaching aims:

Knowledge aim: students will master words and expressions about qualities of a friend such as “good listener” and “make me laugh”.

Ability aim: students are able to talk about their friends with others fluently; can get detailed information in the dialogue through intensive listening.

Emotional aim: students will get more interested in speaking English and learn to love their friends.

II. Teaching key and difficult points:

Key point: expressions about qualities of a friend such as “good listener” and “make me laugh”

Difficult point:enable students to talk about qualities of their friends in daily life and learn to admire their friends.

III. Teaching methods:

Audio-lingual Method, Task-based Language Teaching Method

IV. Teaching procedures:

Step 1 warming up

Before the class, the teacher will sing a song “Auld Lang Syne” to students and ask them what the song is about. Then ask students whether students are important in their lives or not and why. They can have a free talk about their best friends.

Step 2 pre-listening

Have a discussion: what kind of things are important in a friend? Show qualities in 1a on the screen and let students rank them with 1-7 and 1 is the most important thing. After 3 minutes, invite some students to share their opinions in front of the class using sentences pattern in 1b.

Step 3 while-listening

Introduce the background of the conversation: It is about an interviewer talking with Molly and Mary about their friends. Then listen to the tape twice.

1. extensive listening

Play the tape for the first time. Ask students to find out what Molly and Mary like about their friends. Put the chart of 1c on the blackboard and students are required to fill in the first column . After that, invite a student to give the answer.

2. intensive listening

Ask students to listen to it carefully and find out similarities and differences between the two girls and their friends. Finish the rest of he chart. After listening, invite some students to come to the front and write down their answers on the blackboard.

Step 4 post-listening

Ask students to do a survey in group of four about similarities and differences between you and your best friend. Give them 8 minutes and after that, ask some groups to do a report. Give them some positive evaluations on their performance.

Step 5 summary and homework

The teacher summaries what we have learned today for students and leave some homework: introduce your best friend to your parents using expression and sentences in his class.
