英语教学设计Unit 3 Festivals and Celebrations

Teaching aims:

1. knowledge aims:

1) Students can listen, read ,write and grasp some new words, such as arrival, look forward to and so on;

2) Students can understand the content of the passage and get familiar with different festivals mentioned in the passage such as the festivals for the dead, the festivals for harvest and so on around the world.

3) Students can pay attention to their pronunciation and intonation in their reading the passage and do the discussion work in the class.

1) Students can use reading strategies such as predicting what the passage is mainly about, skimming the main idea of the passage and scanning the specific information from the passage in reading process.

2) Students can get the main ideas and specific information about the festivals and celebrations during their fast reading and careful reading.

1) Students can experience different customs and culture about the festivals and celebrations and they can experience the difference in culture,.

2) Students can be more confident and interested in learning English and they are not shy to speak English in public.

3) Students can cooperate and communicate with partners in their discussion and interview .

1) Students can get the main idea and the detailed information through answering a lot of questions from the passage;

2) Students can understand and grasp the content of the passage and get familiar with different festivals and their celebrations around the world.

1) Students can talk about and share their opinions about the festivals and celebrations.

2) Students can use the reading strategies such as skimming what is the passage mainly about, scanning the main idea of the passage and predicting the main idea of the passage in their reading process.

Teaching procedures:

Step 1 warming up

As mid-autumn festival is coming, I will let students brainstorm the festivals. I will divide students into 4 groups to have a brainstorming competition. The group which can memorize more phrases about festivals can get a prize. And then lead to our topic today-festivals and celebrations. Just like this: Good morning, girls and boys. Before class, let’s play a brainstorming game. You guys need to brainstorm all the words about festivals and I will divide you into 4 groups. And the group who can memorize more in the shortest time can get the prize. So let’s start. Ok, let’s congratulate Group A. Since you have known a lot about the festivals, do you want to know how to celebrate the festivals? Let’s start the new lesson, Festivals and celebrations. (justification: This section can fully promote students’ enthusiasm and creative minds, and it can also lay foundation for the next step. )

Step 2 Pre-reading

I will present some pictures of festivals on the power point to ask students to match them with the corresponding festivals. Then we will have a free talk about the questions: which festival do you like best and why? Just like this: Now look at the pictures on the power point, there are some traditional festivals on the left and on the right is how people celebrate the festivals in a wrong order. So you guys have two tasks, task one is to match the celebrations with the corresponding pictures. And task two is to have a free talk with your partners about which festival do you like and why? I will give you three minutes and three minutes later, I will ask some students to share with us. (Justification: Through the section, students’ sense of cooperation and competition are cultivated, and they can also communicate with their partners about their opinions of the festivals and celebrations)

Step 3 while reading

Firstly, I would like to give students 4 minutes to have a global reading with two tasks. The first task is to find out the main idea of the passage. And the second task is to fill in the form on page 3 about the names of festivals and the countries. Just like this: Now let’s come to the reading part. Firstly, fast reading. I will give you 4 minutes to read the passage quickly and finish two tasks. The first task is that you need to find out the main idea of the passage. And the second task is that turn to the exercise part and finish the table about the names of the festivals and the countries. (Justification: Global reading can help students understand the passage quickly and practice their logical thinking and their skimming and scanning skills are improved as well.)

Then it should be detailed reading. I will let three students read the first three paragraphs carefully and answer two questions: “What are festivals of the dead usually for?” and “Who is in memory of Dragon Boat Festival”? and then explain the new word “arrival”. After this, I will ask student to read the next paragraph and then discuss in groups about Harvest Festivals, especially Thanksgiving Day. Students will show their opinions about this festival in the class. At the same time, I will introduce the history and the ways to celebrate their day in western countries. I would like them to read the last two paragraphs and do the true or false. “The most energetic festival in the world is Spring Festival”. The second one is “Festivals let us enjoy life and proud of our nations”. Just like this: Ok, girls and boys, you have known the main idea of the passage. Now let’s read the first three paragraphs carefully and answer the questions on the power point, the first one is that what are festivals of the dead usually for?” and the second one is that “Who is in memory of Dragon Boat Festival”? And pay attention to the word arrival, it’s the noun form of “arrive”. And let’s make an example, only the timely arrival of the police can prevent the situation from becoming worse. Then let’s read the next paragraph carefully which is about Thanksgiving Day. After reading, we will have a group discussion about what you know about Thanksgiving day. Ok, now comes the last part. After reading, you need to do the True or False exercises on the power point. The first one is “The most energetic festival in the world is Spring Festival”. The second one is “Festivals let us enjoy life and proud of our nations”. (Justification: After all these reading, students can have a deeper understanding of the passage.)

Step 4 Post reading

The forth step is post-reading. I will ask students to do an interview. Work in pairs, one acts as interviewer, and the the one is the official of National Tourism Administration who is in charge of introducing festivals in China. And then they will show their interviews in the class to pick out the best performance to be praised. Just like this: Since you have known the main idea and the specific information of the passage, let’s use what we have learned today to do an interview. Let’s work in pairs, one student acts as an interviewer, and the other one acts as the official of National Tourism administration who is in charge of introducing festivals in China. I will give you five minutes to ask and answer about Chinese festivals. Five minutes later, four pairs will be invited to the platform and show your interview. (Justification: In this activity, students’ creative thinking and sense of cooperation can be cultivated and they can talk about the festivals and celebrations.)

Step 5 Summary and homework

I will make a summary with my students. After class, they need to search more information about festivals and choose the one they like to make a poster. Just like this: Ok, now let’s summarize what we have learned today together. We have learned a lot of festivals and celebrations. And we have known a lot about the Thanksgiving Day, such as we often eat turkey and get together on Thanksgiving Day. We also have an interview about introducing the Chinese festivals. After class, you can search more information about the festivals you like and make a poster. Next class, we will have a show about your poster and the best one will be praised. (Justification: In this way, students’ operational ability are developed and they can search more information about the topic we have learned today as well.)
